This workshop will address a variety of requirements and conditions that will help the new social work clinician avoid some of the common pitfalls and problems during the early phase of the treatment relationship with emphasis on the first session.  “Getting it right from the start” will focus on assessment and treatment planning along with some of the following: effective handling of the initial telephone inquiry, early establishment of a collaborative alliance, collecting data, asking good questions, efficient use of time, formulating differential diagnoses and treatment plans, handling difficulties in the interview and much more.

Learning Objectives:
As a result of attending this workshop, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe significant components of an effective initial interview.
  2. List five to six useful clinical questions to be used in the first interview.
  3. Define two ways that you would handle each of the following four sensitive subjects; (1) uncooperative clients, (2) lengthy silences (3) vagueness and (4) hostility.
  4. Provide a brief case example of how this workshop helped to strengthen your ability to develop rapport with a new client, be sure to include reflective listening, ways that you will identify and address early resistances and your assessment of this client’s coping repertoires.

Presenter:

Richard B. Joelson, DSW, LCSW has been a practicing clinical social worker, clinical social work administrator and an instructor at the Bachelor, Master and Doctoral  levels during his long career.  He received his master's degree from Columbia University School of Social Work and his doctorate from The Silberman School of Social Work – Hunter College of the City University of New York.  Dr. Joelson completed both institute training and individualized tutorials with senior psychoanalysts throughout his career. He is the author of Help Me! A Psychotherapist’s Tried-and-True Techniques for a Happier Relationship with Yourself and the People you Love.” (2016, Health Psychology Press). He maintains a private practice in New York City
