This session will provide a review of substance abuse definitions and will outline how substance abuse issues affect the Gay community more than others. We will explore reasons for the higher rates of substance abuse in the Gay population and as per the self-medication hypothesis, we will identify which substances are used and why. We will also explore some of the unique stressors on the Gay community that foster higher rates of substance abuse. We will then address barriers to treatment for this population and ways to most effectively treat these issues that includes a transtheoretical, integrated model that leaves room for treatment for those who are reactive to twelve-step ideology.
