The workshop will present an overview of the different types of PTSD and the Traumatic experiences from which they arose. Biofeedback relaxation techniques will be reviewed and demonstrated. The latest psychotherapeutic treatments employed to treat PTSD symptoms and the traumas associated with them, will be reviewed and illustrated through case studies. An analysis of the behavioral, emotional and neurological aspects of PTSD and trauma will bring synthesis to the entire learning experience. Reading material relating to PTSD, trauma and the biofeedback relaxation symptom reduction interventions will be provided to all participants before the workshop date.

As a result of attending this workshop, participants will be able:
- Compare and contrast symptoms of posttraumatic stress and symptoms arising from other mental disorders through illustration and discussion.
- Explain the role of the autonomic nervous system in the understanding and treatment of posttraumatic stress through illustration and discussion.
- Identify how biofeedback/relaxation techniques provide relief to the symptoms of posttraumatic stress by promoting homeostasis—parasympathetic dominance—within the autonomic nervous system through illustration and discussion.
- Describe the latest, most effective, psychotherapeutic treatment approaches to posttraumatic stress through illustration and discussion.
- Describe how biofeedback/relaxation techniques can provide a foundation upon which deeper trauma sensitive work can commence and explain through illustration and discussion.
Presenter:
Roger Keizerstein, LCSW, is a pediatric clinical social worker, certified trauma professional, writer and public speaker. His essays and case studies have appeared in The New Social Worker Magazine, The Neuro-psychotherapist and The Science of Psychotherapy Magazine. He has been in private practice in East Setauket, Long Island for 37 years.
This workshop is appropriate for clinicians with all levels of experience.
Who May Benefit from attending: social workers, psychiatrists, psychologists, licensed psychoanalysts, nurse practitioners and family and marriage/couple therapists and mental health counselors.
