What does it mean to the patient who returns to the same therapist many years after leaving therapy? How will the therapist’s years of development and new directions now impact the patient? How will the parallel process of the patient impact the therapeutic encounter? Cases illustrating this occurrence will be discussed.

An in-depth analysis using case examples, will demonstrate how the “second encounter” can function as an opportunity for client growth.

Teaching Methods:   Lecture, presentation of case vignettes and audience participation.
HANDOUTS: Bibliography/References

Learning Objectives:

As a result of attending this workshop, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe the effect of aging of the therapist and the patient and its impact on the earlier attachment to, and separation from the therapist.
  2. Explain how the passing of time affects reconnecting with the patient who returns to treatment.
  3. Identify and describe whether there is a regression in the patient or whether a new circumstance arrived that required further treatment.
  4. Identify if an attachment and separation from the therapist, following the first analysis within the case presented, has been resolved or unresolved and explain your reasoning.
  5. Describe how the concept of the therapeutic relationship evolved over time and whether, and/or when, there may be a right time to end.
