The New York State Society For Clinical Social Work Staten Island Chapter With The Advanced Clinical Education Foundation presents:

COMPLICATED BEREAVEMENT, CLINICAL INTERVENTIONS FOR HEALING AND CREATING MEANING - LIVE ONLINE VIA ZOOM

Program Description

Sometimes grief feels like an endurance test that never ends due to experiencing multiple losses in a row, the resurfacing of previous loss/trauma’s psychosocial impact, or difficulty resolving feelings due to a “complicated” relationship to the dead. Add to this mix a sudden, traumatic, “senseless” or avoidable death and/or a death within a culture-wide context of grief (such as COVID 19) and you have the perfect grief storm. Daniel Siegel’s ever-evolving work on the intersection of mindfulness and interpersonal neurobiology can help us understand what a therapeutic alliance looks like in the midst of such overwhelming losses. Pete Walker’s work on Complex PTSD and Bessel van der Kolk’s work on healing trauma by working with the brain, mind and body can help us provide nuanced, trauma-informed bereavement. This course teaches bereavement interventions through case studies gathered from years of hospice as well as private practice experience. Learn how to holistically explore the intricacies of complicated grief with evidence-based practices and co-create interventions with grieving clients that honor and utilize their complexity for healing.

Anne Grenchus, LCSW has blended social work and philosophy in her academic and clinical studies and work over the course of twenty years. Anne has an M.A. in Philosophy and an M.A. in Social Work, with Advanced Certification in Hospice and Palliative Care. Her 5+ years of “exceptional” hospice home care and bereavement counselor work shown that phenomenological existentialism can provide a practical framework through which people living in an individualistic society can explore life challenges. In her private practice, she now uses trauma-informed approaches to meet her client’s needs during the pandemic. Anne teaches workshops on grief, on communication and de-escalation techniques for psychiatric and dementia patients by exploring patients’ lived experience of care provision, and she has taught phenomenological existentialism to undergraduates.
