Relating to clients as if they are of one mind is fraught with difficulty and often leads to overidentification with parts considered to be undesirable. By offering a multi-part model of mind allows for a more dynamic view of mind and is generally consistent with the way individuals internally experience their mental life. This “part” model makes it possible to flesh out different parts to learn what each part is doing for the individual. Parts are of two types: Protectors and Exiles (the parts being protected). Welcoming all parts often serves to reduce resistance and can help individuals appreciate the positive intent of protector parts . Once appreciated these parts are more willing to relax their more extreme positions so that an individuals core Self can help heal Exiled parts that are carrying emotional wounds.
