THE NEW YORK STATE SOCIETY FOR CLINICAL SOCIAL WORK METROPOLITAN CHAPTER WITH THE ADVANCED CLINICAL EDUCATION FOUNDATION PRESENTS:

THE POWER AND CHALLENGE OF UNCOVERING AND WORKING WITH EARLY SHAME STATES IN PSYCHOANALYTIC PSYCHOTHERAPY

Program Description

This clinically-focused workshop describes some of the challenges that can arise when working with patients who suffer from early relational or attachment trauma. In particular we will pay attention to the often-hidden nature of chronic shame and the therapeutic challenges that early unformulated shame can present in clinical work. A portion of the workshop will focus on the nature of shame and how to identify it. We will use case material to discuss the origins of preverbal shame and illustrate how it gets created and repeated in relationships. We will explore some of the ways that shame presents in the therapy relationship and how to recognize the most common defenses against shame. We will consider how dissociated shame – both the patient’s and therapist’s – can impede relatedness and contribute to impasse and rupture. We will also illustrate effective techniques for working with the emergence of shame in the therapy.
