THE NEW YORK STATE SOCIETY FOR CLINICAL SOCIAL WORK MID-HUDSON CHAPTER WITH THE ADVANCED CLINICAL EDUCATION FOUNDATION PRESENTS:

LETTING GO OF THE WORK YOU LOVE: HOW THERAPISTS CAN PREPARE TO RETIRE OR CLOSE A PRACTICE WITH CARE AND COMPASSION

Program Description

A huge cohort of therapists, primarily women, are approaching retirement age. Retiring as a psychotherapist is complex, involving considerations that other professions don’t face. The impact of dealing with multiple losses – from the deep attachment of client relationships, to one’s professional identity, and letting go of the ties to peer collegiality – must be addressed in order for a therapist to retire well.

If you are among the 60,000 + therapists moving toward retirement age, you may find yourself wondering: When is the right time to leave my practice? How will I feel about letting it go? What do I leave behind as a legacy of the years I have spent in this work? It is the uniqueness of our career that makes it challenging, compelling, fulfilling and exhausting—and ultimately much harder to let go.

This workshop takes therapists through a process of discussion, thinking and planning before illness or another circumstance intervenes to force an unwanted retirement. In this session you will:

• Clarify the significant personal emotional and psychological feelings, worries and obstacles that make it challenging to step away from an intensely value-driven profession
• Prepare for the losses of client relationships, professional therapist identity, peer collegiality, and intellectual stimulation that the profession currently provides
• Recognize your legacy and impact before retiring. Honor the uniqueness of being a therapist by claiming the skills, talents and gifts that have defined your career
• Identify the gains and benefits from a retirement tailored for your situation, to make the most of the next stage of life and move forward.
