ACE Foundation Programs
This workshop is designed to help clinicians with developing coherent narratives and reconstructing memories of likely experiences in childhood for clients who lack memory of childhood due to chronic trauma and chronic sub-traumatic experiences. The purpose is to assist clients in making sense of their experiences as adults that resonate from these childhood experiences in order to reduce inappropriate guilt and self-blame for distress and difficulties in their personal and interpersonal relationships and mental health symptoms, and to begin healing from these experiences.

The Advanced Clinical Education (ACE) Foundation of the NYS Society for Clinical Social Work, Inc. is recognized by the New York State Education Department’s State Board for Social Work as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed marriage and family therapists #MFT-0028; licensed mental health counselors #MHC-0045; licensed psychoanalysts #P-0017; licensed psychologists #PSY-0121; and licensed social workers #SW-0056.
Out-of-state providers are welcome to request a certificate upon completion of the presentation evaluation but must check with their own state licensing boards to inquire about whether or not the certificate is recognized as transferrable for CEs in their state’s jurisdiction.
By the end of this continuing education activity, participants will be able to:
1. Describe how chronic childhood trauma can cause limited memory of childhood.
2. Describe the role of attachment in the interruption of memory integration and formation.
3. Implement at least three brief intervention skills that assist with the construction of childhood narratives through the identification of probable themes and patterns of experience, and likely interpersonal experiences, where there is a lack of memory, including: a) the use of core memories; b) the use of projective identification; c) the elicitation of interactions between the client’s adult and child states and brief skills to move through barriers to this interaction; and d) the use of somatic access to emotion states and loose association to trace to childhood experiences.
Psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, licensed psychoanalysts, nurse practitioners and family and marriage/couple therapists and mental health counselors.
This seminar is appropriate for clinicians with all levels of experience.
Ian Laidlaw, LCSW-R is originally from New Zealand and has also practiced in Japan and England. He established and directed an OMH-licensed community mental health clinic, taught a trauma course at Fordham University for the Graduate Social Work program, produced a psychotherapy podcast, and continues to supervise and train other psychotherapists. He currently runs two private group practices in NY and NJ. He has a Master’s Degree in Social work from Fordham University and a Masters of Arts and Bachelor of Science from Otago University in New Zealand.
Contact Hours will be awarded once the entire course is completed, as evidenced by signing in and out and completing a course evaluation. Certificates will be emailed approximately ten business days after the completion of the course.
