THE NEW YORK STATE SOCIETY FOR CLINICAL SOCIAL WORK WESTCHESTER CHAPTER WITH THE ADVANCED CLINICAL EDUCATION FOUNDATION PRESENTS:

WHEN THE THERAPIST HAS A SERIOUS ILLNESS: SHEDDING LIGHT ON A CLINICAL DARK ZONE

Program Description

A therapist’s serious illness has been a taboo subject in our professional community! It is time to explore this subject by first acknowledging that the therapist, as a human being, experiences personal vulnerability at times of illness. Many professional issues come into question, such as how the therapist can handle their vulnerability, whether or how it is appropriate to disclose to clients and colleagues, how self-disclosure can serve the client’s best interests, and how to manage ruptures and repairs in the relationship.

This presentation is based on the wealth of over 100 interviews of experiences shared by therapists who’ve had an illness and clients who’ve had ill therapists or who have died. The implications are enormous in our clinical field, as any of us may face an unexpected illness or accident. The learning from this workshop is an insurance policy.

We will utilize didactic learning, an experiential exercise, engage in lively group discussion, and view a video of a therapist handling disclosure and another video of her client sharing her experience with her therapist. There will be handouts.

Roberta Omin LCSW
