The “6-Step Defense Attorney Technique” developed by the presenter leverages the client’s familiarity with legal concepts and processes to make challenging and refuting negative irrational thoughts more readily accessible. Combining narrative therapy techniques with guided imagery, the client is invited into a courtroom after they have created an imaginary highly skilled defense team. From their empowered position at the defense table, hearing a prosecutor present their self-limiting, negative cognitive distortions as allegations allows the client to see them as refutable, creating reasonable doubt. Going forward, recurrence of their irrational thoughts is associated with the vivid memory of the courtroom acquittal, which reinforces a positive self-narrative. Case examples will be used to demonstrate the inherent flexibility within the approach that allows it to be applied to a variety of diagnoses and to be readily integrated with other therapeutic interventions as part of a treatment plan.
