Anyone who is an emotional eater is no stranger to shame— shame about how insatiable they can feel at their core, shame about what lengths they have gone to get food, and shame for the secret gorging rampages that override reason. An emotional eater’s most intense fear is that what they do in secret with food will be found out, and they will be exposed to ridicule because everyone will then know the truth of how greedy they really are.
This deep inner sense of shame can drive individuals to the temporary comfort of a relationship with food. In the case of emotional eating, though, the painful paradox is that overeating, starving or purging, which they originally turned to for relief of shameful feelings, turns on them in time and becomes a source of shame in its own right. The very method they used to help themselves with pain begins to generate its own pain and shame. What began as a solution becomes the problem. A cycle emerges: Shame → Secrecy → Symptom → More Shame.
The secrecy of eating disorder patients leads to resistances in the treatment as patients waver between wanting help but also shame about disclosing their eating behavior. Treatment methods that therapists can employ to reduce shame will be discussed. Transference and countertransference reactions will be explored as we help patients become more curious about themselves and less judgmental.
We will delve into the 13 shame triggers for emotional eaters with extensive case examples and explore the strategies for treatment.
