THE NEW YORK STATE SOCIETY FOR CLINICAL SOCIAL WORK WESTCHESTER CHAPTER WITH THE ADVANCED CLINICAL EDUCATION FOUNDATION PRESENTS:

EXPLORING THE CONNECTION BETWEEN SHAME, RACISM AND PRIVILEGE

Program Description

Theodore Rubin said, “Shame and self-hate are the greatest anti-therapeutic agents in existence, and their destructive potential is almost limitless”. Unaddressed and unconscious shame causes social workers to avoid the study of shame and remain unaware of its impact on clients, coworkers, and themselves as clinicians.
Shame is a human dynamic that is rarely considered in its connection to privilege and racism. Unaddressed shame can cause any discussion of privilege or racism to become reactive and disruptive for social workers attempting to build healthy, culturally relevant relationships with clients and coworkers. This workshop will increase social workers’ comfort with these three uncomfortable and often avoided topics.
