When individuals hear the word “loss”, sometimes the word “death” comes to mind, and grief is associated with it. However, the experience of grief comes in many forms and exists in response to several situations of loss. This presentation will highlight how, in response to “non-death loss”, such as the experience of “losing” a child to growing up, parents and families are impacted on psychological and relational levels. We will explore the impact of development on grief responses, the role of maturational loss in the process of “growing up” — its implications for growth, identity, and connection in parent-child relationships. The following concepts will be considered and explored through discussion: ambiguous loss, disenfranchised grief, and peer-ship. Practical considerations for how to facilitate helpful conversation in the face of non-death loss in parent-child relationships will be discussed as a means for fostering improved relational connection. Contextual and cultural issues and their role in experiences of non-death-related loss will be integrated throughout the lecture and will offer a foundation for understanding how to apply this topic to a variety of clinical, educational, and personal settings.
