INTRODUCTION TO NATIVE CULTURE, HISTORY, AND INTERVENTION FROM A CHEROKEE PERSPECTIVE

Program Description

The history of genocide and cultural genocide has a profound impact on members of tribal nations that now exist in the modern-day United States. The presenter of this training is a member of the Cherokee Nation who was raised on the territory. The presentation will provide a brief overview of the history of Native communities, starting before colonization. This history will include genocide, Indian American Wars, cultural genocide through boarding schools, sovereignty, and the Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA). Additionally, some aspects of Native culture will be described, such as hierarchy, role of autonomy, language, spirituality, expression through art, and family structure. The presentation will end with a description of interventions effective with tribal communities, as well as engagement strategies.
