ADDRESSING THE CLINICAL NEEDS OF FAMILIES WITH TRANSGENDER, NON-BINARY, AND GENDER NON-CONFORMING CLIENTS

Program Description

This course provides foundation knowledge and general practice skills for working with families with gender nonconforming, non-binary, and transgender children. The role of family members, service providers, and educational institutions will be discussed. Participants will gain knowledge of the development of gender identity- formation, trans-affirming health care, and familial issues, across the life span, including the coming-out process and the potential outcomes for children and youth. Additionally, we will review educational policy, and pending civil and legal issues that impact youth and their families.

We will explore the differences between sexual orientation and gender identity and the developmental process youth experience who recognize gender identity struggles. This workshop will frame transgender emergence as a normative process of identity development and will challenge the view that gender variance is pathological. Lifecycle issues will be reviewed including social transition for pre-pubertal children who are expressing gender nonconformity, puberty blockers and hormonal treatment to assist adolescents beginning transition, and utilizing the WPATH Standards of Care. The discussion will focus on ways for families to assist children and teens in healthy gender development, regardless of how typical or atypical their gender expression may be, and sensitive to the intersectionality of race/ethnicity, religion, and community diversity.
