ACE Foundation Programs
How do we grieve–and survive? What do we do when we hit a grief wall? In the past year deaths are more likely to be sudden due to COVID-19. These deaths may be experienced as traumatic due to a decreased time of anticipatory grief and the inability to process these deaths because our culture’s usual guideposts are often absent during lockdowns. To thrive on the other side of grief requires finding solutions to questions we are living out but often do not ask. Grief is an instructive human experience with a purpose that can structure our understanding of ourselves. If explored, questions can help individuals create a healing approach for themselves despite the pressure to hurry up and “get on with their lives” or to “power through” this cultural season of death.
This presentation teaches bereavement interventions that are informed by the lived experience of grief. Paying attention to what it truly feels like to grieve exposes how deeply social we truly are on all levels: interpersonal, cognitive, environmental and bodily. Svend Brinkmann’s recent work on this topic will be outlined so that we have language for how complex our grief experiences are especially within an individualistic culture. With the help of Daniel Siegel’s work on neural integration, we will apply this multi-dimensional, deeply social understanding of grief to real case studies gathered from years of hospice experience. These case studies will reveal 15 often unasked grief questions. Learn how to holistically explore these questions with evidence-based practices and co-create interventions with grieving clients that honor and utilize their deep sociality for healing. The case studies will include intervention templates to use with clients with similar questions.

Anne Grenchus, LCSW has blended social work and philosophy in her academic and clinical studies and work for o twenty-five years. Her five years of “exceptional” hospice home care and bereavement counselor work has proven that phenomenological existentialism can provide a practical framework through which people living in an individualistic society can explore life challenges. Anne teaches practical workshops to hospice staff/volunteers on communication and de-escalation techniques for psychiatric and dementia patients by exploring patients’ lived experience of care provision, somatic self-care techniques to help mitigate pandemic-related stress, and, she has taught phenomenological existentialism the theoretical foundation of Sven Brinkmann’s work to undergraduates.
Contact Hours will be awarded once the entire course is completed, as evidenced by signing in and out and completing a course evaluation. Certificates will be emailed approximately ten business days after the completion of the course.
