The New York State Society For Clinical Social Work Westchester Chapter With The Advanced Clinical Education Foundation presents:

DEEPENING THE CONNECTION: PSYCHODRAMA’S TOOLS TO BRIDGE THE GAP IN TIMES OF ISOLATION

Program Description

In this presentation, we will identify commonalities among clinicians’ experiences of working remotely, after two years of visceral separations from our clients and our colleagues. We will also identify providers’ typical desires and goals that have surfaced in the wake of remote work. As specialists in the field of attunement, how has the screen-based treatment experience impacted our own drives to support and deepen our efficacy with our clients? We will use Psychodrama’s methods to help clinicians and their clients navigate the difficulties of remote work. The presenter will link the goal of deepening connections with clients to the basic core interventions of Psychodrama, doubling and role reversal. She will demonstrate these techniques. Ms. Coburn will also encourage participants to present client situations where these basic tools will support clients’ goals, by enhancing the safety in the therapeutic relationship.

Psychodrama is a method of psychotherapy in which clients are encouraged to continue and complete their actions through enactments, role playing and dramatic self-presentation. Clients develop skills to use both verbal and non-verbal communications to clarify their experience and the thoughts, feelings and behaviors associated with the experience. Psychodrama is one of five Creative Arts Therapies which is ideally suited to enhance the connections between people. Its structured enactments, group work modality and solid structure and boundaries, enable enhanced connections among participants.

Attendees will also benefit from the presenter’s vast multifaceted experiences and her commitment to and passion for action methods and engaging style. She will summarize the literature and will integrate the learning and “containing tools” from five studies of various populations receiving psychodrama. The presenter will share similar results from comparable studies of three of the other Creative Arts Therapies (dance movement, music and art). She will also identify the benefits of basic psychodramatic interventions, fashioned with the intent to amplify clients’ sense of safety with the therapist. Finally, Ms. Coburn will share video enactments of psychodrama’s basic tools (doubling and role reversal) and empower participants to use them in their clinical work.
