ACE Foundation Programs
Imago Relationship Therapy was founded and developed by Harville Hendrix, Ph.D. as a paradigm shift in treating couples based on psychodynamic postulate. Imago Relationship theory views the purpose of adult love relationships as a conduit for healing childhood wounds and helping the psyche expand by transforming defensive adaptions into more integrated and secure resources. Thus, allowing more energy to be focused on the present rather than being used in defensive modalities.
Imago uses the intra-psychic phenomenon of the repetition compulsion to help couples learn to cooperate with each other’s unconscious agenda for repair rather than having on-going experiences of re-wounding which promote defensive behavior and leave couples stuck in power struggles which lead to ruptures in attachment. The lecture will identify, explore and deepen the theoretical constructs of Imago Relationship Therapy, introduce the skills of Imago Therapy and discuss the paradigm shift of Imago which makes the relationship the primary focus of treatment and the individual the variable.
