New York State Society for Clinical Social Work Westchester Chapter with the ACE Foundation of NYSSCSW Presents

MEDICAL CANNABIS: A CLINICAL FOCUS

Program Description

This seminar is designed to focus on the health care team’s role in the utilization of medical cannabis for symptom management. How does the healthcare team, more specifically a therapist or social worker, help a client who is self-medicating with cannabis? People who experience long-term chronic pain that is not abated can suffer from serious depression and also brain chemistry changes that negatively affect functioning. Medical marijuana has been promoted as an alternative to opioids and other medications and medical procedures that can be dangerous and expensive.

Participants will learn some of the medical uses for marijuana and its efficacy as well as learn about new substances such as K2 that young people are using with such severe symptom reactions. The focus of this seminar will be on how a social worker or therapist can use this information when treating clients who are experiencing significant pain. I will discuss the state of current efforts to control the many mutations of these new marijuana-like substances and describe the current thinking on marijuana addiction, given the legalizations across many states, and thus how it affects a social worker or therapist’s approach with their clients. The Community Relations Manager, (an MSW with over 20 years of experience as a social worker, advocate, and Approved Mediator), from Etain, the only women-owned marijuana dispensary in New York, will share her perspectives about clients who need marijuana in order to relieve symptoms and have a good quality of life.

Dr. Junella Chin lived and practiced medicine in California, a state with legalized medical cannabis since 1996. She is the co-founder and Medical Director of MedLeafRx, an integrative clinic focused on children with intractable epilepsy, cancer, and autism. She has seen firsthand just how much medical cannabis can benefit patients. Dr. Chin is a chronic pain survivor. Dr. Chin is a frequent keynote speaker on the science and medicine of cannabis and has spoken at hospitals, conferences, and events all over the world.
