It is believed that when sexuality goes well for couples, it is a positive but not major component in the level of marital vitality and satisfaction – adding perhaps 15-20%. However, when dysfunction exists, when desire discrepancies are present or when sex is nonexistent, it can play an inordinately powerful role in robbing the marriage of 50-70% of its intimacy and vitality. It is a long held belief in the therapeutic community that couple sexual issues are simply a symptom of marital distress and that once the marital issues are resolved, sex will naturally take its rightful place. In some instances, this is true. However, often it’s the reverse, when sexual issues are the focus of treatment and resolved, marital satisfaction is heightened. In this workshop, while exploring the impact of sex and sexuality on the lives of our clients, we will address the inherent challenges of talking about sex, sexuality and intimacy. We will examine where our client’s sex education comes from, explore the myths and, most importantly move beyond them. We will look at major components to a satisfying sexual experience, illuminate the issues undermining each and explore treatment options.
