ACE Foundation Programs
At the onset of Covid in March 2020 we stressfully and courageously migrated our practices to online. Something was lost. Something was gained. For some of us our sensory processing systems were overloaded. For others, under-stimulated. Some found their online sessions better than ‘in-person’. Revisiting Zoom and other virtual platforms two years plus after the onset of the pandemic we will explore our screens as a phenomena providing a transitional space not subscribing to conditions in the material world such as space, time, and the usual and traditional rules of engagement.
Martin Buber said “Our relationship lives in the space between us – it lives in the space we live together, and that space is sacred space”. Working online Buber’s quote takes on new meaning. Framing the internet as transitional space and our screens as transitional objects we will delve ‘beneath’ psychodynamics where we become ‘therapist architects’ creating living space, embodied places of meaning and meeting with our clients. This rich in-between territory engages implicit relational patterns, habitual ways of being in the world, and the essence of hope, creativity, and healing so core to the work we love.
This online presentation is live and an experiential opportunity to open a multi-dimensional engagement between you-AND-your-computer screen and your clients. Drawing upon somatic psychotherapy, polyvagal theory and attachment theory, a neuroscience of architecture and ongoing research emerging from studies in virtual reality, we will explore how on-line work affords us a horizon of possibility through our relational presence, empathic imagination, somatic attunement, and a deeply embodied resonance with the relational field.

The Advanced Clinical Education (ACE) Foundation of the NYS Society for Clinical Social Work, Inc. is recognized by the New York State Education Department’s State Board for Social Work as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed marriage and family therapists #MFT-0028; licensed mental health counselors #MHC-0045; licensed psychoanalysts #P-0017; licensed psychologists #PSY-0121; and licensed social workers #SW-0056.
Out-of-state providers are welcome to request a certificate upon completion of the presentation evaluation but must check with their own state licensing boards to inquire about whether or not the certificate is recognized as transferrable for CEs in their state’s jurisdiction.

Terry Nathanson, LCSW brings over 35 years’ experience in the field of mind body health and wellness to his clinical practice as a psychotherapist and supervisor. He is certified in Gestalt Therapy, eating based mindfulness, and nondual integrated kabbalistic healing and utilizes a somatic Internal Family Systems approach and trauma informed mindfulness with individuals and couples. Since the onset of Covid-19 Terry has supported hundreds of mental health professionals in their transition to online work with clients. He weaves together western psychology and the latest research in applied neuroscience with eastern spiritual traditions.
In addition to his private practice, Terry is an Adjunct Assistant Professor at NYU’s Silver School of Social Work Master’s program where he teaches courses on emotional regulation, neurobiology, and mindfulness. He leads an ongoing practice group for therapists at the Westchester Chapter of NYSSCSW in the study of mindfulness and neuroscience. Terry has led retreats at Omega Institute in Rhinebeck NY on eating and sexuality, at Kripalu in Massachusetts on the energetics of intimacy, and at the Gestalt Center of Mexico on generational approaches to couple’s therapy. He has presented at Renfrew Center’s Annual Conferences in Pa. on movement therapy and the evolution of a therapist.
Contact Hours will be awarded once the entire course is completed, as evidenced by signing in and out and completing a course evaluation. Certificates will be emailed approximately ten business days after the completion of the course.
