Upcoming Program
NYSSCSW Mid Hudson Chapter Co-sponsored with The Advanced Clinical Education Foundation of the NYSSCSW Presents:
This workshop will address working with anxiety states both acute and chronic, using Somatic Experiencing and the expansion technique of embodying difficult emotions. The idea behind this is that the more capacity we can build in the physiology to feel these emotions in a relatively safe and supportive therapeutic environment, the more we can promote healing.
We will go over some basic and easy to digest information about the state of the autonomic nervous system in the experience of anxiety, whether acute as in panic, or chronic. We will discuss ways to increase awareness of the body in ourselves and our clients through the use of languaging and simple somatic interventions.
The importance of using social engagement as a necessary tool for working with anxiety will be stressed. We’ll discuss the function of the Vagus nerve as well as other cranial nerves involved in social engagement and how to “wake up” these nerves during anxiety to alleviate the experience.
Members of NYSSCSW $20
Non-members of NYSSCSW $60
Students (with School ID) $25
*Student fees are only for social work or MHC master level, full time student
At the end of this presentation, participants will be able to:
Psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, licensed psychoanalysts, nurse practitioners and family and marriage/couple therapists and mental health counselors.
This seminar is appropriate for clinicians with all levels of experience.
Dr. Shideh Lennon is returning to do a second workshop for us. She has been practicing psychotherapy since 1998. Originally trained in psychodynamic and relational psychotherapy, she now integrates Somatic Experiencing into her work. The focus of her work is on promoting embodied resilience by supporting the nervous system to release long held trauma and allowing the body and mind’s natural healing resilience to manifest. Dr. Lennon’s specialties include complex trauma, developmental trauma, syndromes such as chronic pain, IBS, and autoimmune disorders. The embodiment of emotions is central to Dr. Lennon’s work as well. Dr. Lennon is currently on faculty track at Somatic Experiencing International where she has been facilitating trainings for the last seven years. She also teaches workshops on embodied resilience for psychotherapists and non-therapists alike. Dr. Lennon’s more than twenty years of experience in Zen and mindfulness mediation creates a container of warmth, compassion, and spaciousness in her work.
