This workshop lecture will provide an overview of the burgeoning worldwide incidence of microprocessor-related mental disorders that has emerged since the wide-scale introduction of microprocessor-based transaction and communication products into our daily lives (e.g., computers, smartphones) and the necessity of social adaptation to new technology. After reviewing the history of pathological microprocessor use, we will explore the questions, “Is ‘internet/microprocessor addiction’ a bona fide disorder?” “Is the Internet just a platform for other behavioral addictions?” and, “Is Internet addiction a function of other disorders?” The scientific evidence for Internet Gaming Disorder as a discrete diagnostic category will be reviewed as an exemplar demonstrating the coherence of the microprocessor use disorder concept. Then, science-based approaches to treatment, still in their early stages, will be described, as well as commonsense approaches derived from the addiction field.
