ACE Foundation Programs
This course will cover the evolution of psychoanalytic theory beginning with Freudian psychoanalysis and drive theory, followed by the increasingly social object relations theory, evolving into Kohut’s use of empathy and empathic immersion in the theories of self-psychology and finally the co-created treatment relationship in contemporary relational theory.

The Advanced Clinical Education (ACE) Foundation of the NYS Society for Clinical Social Work, Inc. is recognized by the New York State Education Department’s State Board for Social Work as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed marriage and family therapists #MFT-0028; licensed mental health counselors #MHC-0045; licensed psychoanalysts #P-0017; licensed psychologists #PSY-0121; and licensed social workers #SW-0056.
Out-of-state providers are welcome to request a certificate upon completion of the presentation evaluation but must check with their own state licensing boards to inquire about whether or not the certificate is recognized as transferrable for CEs in their state’s jurisdiction.

Karen Kaufman, Ph.D., LCSW, has been in private practice in Manhattan for nearly thirty years and was an adjunct faculty member at Fordham University Graduate School of Social Service/Westchester Division from 1998-2014. She has been president of the Metropolitan Chapter of the NYSSCSW since 2011 and President of the ACE Foundation of the NYSSCSW since 2014. Dr. Kaufman has published in the Clinical Social Work Journal and presented on several occasions on the subject of treatment failure, transference and countertransference.
