ACE Foundation Programs
This course provides foundation knowledge and general practice skills for working with transgender and gender variant clients. Participants will gain knowledge of transgender historical and political perspectives, the development of trans identity-formation, health, mental health and familial issues, and transgender issues across the life span including the coming-out process. Intersectionality of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, and gender identity expression will be addressed along with ethical and legal issues which impact trans and gender variant individuals and their families. Participants will learn how to practice with trans and gender variant clients in culturally relevant ways, and resources for support and information will be identified.

The Advanced Clinical Education (ACE) Foundation of the NYS Society for Clinical Social Work, Inc. is recognized by the New York State Education Department’s State Board for Social Work as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed marriage and family therapists #MFT-0028; licensed mental health counselors #MHC-0045; licensed psychoanalysts #P-0017; licensed psychologists #PSY-0121; and licensed social workers #SW-0056.
Out-of-state providers are welcome to request a certificate upon completion of the presentation evaluation but must check with their own state licensing boards to inquire about whether or not the certificate is recognized as transferrable for CEs in their state’s jurisdiction.

Gerald P. Mallon, LCSW, DSW, is a Julia Lathrop Professor of Child Welfare and the Associate Dean of Scholarship and Research at the Silberman School of Social Work at Hunter College in New York City. Dr. Mallon has been a child welfare practitioner, advocate, educator, and researcher for over forty four years. He was the first child welfare professional in the U.S. to research, write about, and develop programs for LGBTQ youth in child welfare settings.
Dr. Mallon has written extensively about sexual orientation and gender identity expression. He serves on numerous editorial boards and is the senior editor of the professional journal, Child Welfare and the author or editor of more than twenty-four books. Dr. Mallon’s most recent publications, are Social work practice with lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people, (3rd edition) published by Routledge Press and Child welfare for the twenty-first century: A Handbook of practices, policies, and programs (2nd edition), Co-Edited with Peg Hess, published by Columbia University Press. Dr. Mallon has lectured and worked extensively throughout the United States, and internationally.
Contact Hours will be awarded once the entire course is completed, as evidenced by signing in and out and completing a course evaluation. Certificates will be emailed approximately ten business days after the completion of the course.
