WORKING WITH DREAMS IN INDIVIDUAL TREATMENT: A CASE STUDY OF A YOUNG ADULT MALE PRESENTING WITH DEPRESSION AND ACADEMIC DIFFICULTIES

Program Description

The workshop will address the value of integrating dream analysis into the fabric of the therapeutic process. The seminar will address key concepts in the use dream analysis including; the first dream, the symbolism and metaphor of the dream, the importance of the patient’s associations to their dreams, manifest and latent content, the life context of the dream, and the dream as a reflection of the patient’s engagement in the therapeutic process. The workshop will demonstrate the helpfulness of dream analysis in understanding the psychodynamics and internal world of two young adult patients who have been seen in individual treatment with presenting problems of depression, anxiety and conflicts related to separation and individuation.

Program Details

As a result of attending this workshop, participants will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate learning by being able to associate the seminar content to their own clinical experience.
  2. Practice with a greater understanding of the many facets of dream analysis and be aware of the therapeutic role that it could serve in their clinical practice.
  3. Describe key concepts useful in the technique of dream analysis.
  4. Employ new therapeutic skills with the goal of helping the patient to open up and deepen the treatment experience.

Psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, licensed psychoanalysts, nurse practitioners and family and marriage/couple therapists and mental health counselors.

This seminar is appropriate for clinicians with all levels of experience.

Michael De Simone, Ph.D., LCSW, is a clinical social worker with over thirty years of clinical practice. He is a graduate of the Doctoral Program at the New York University School of Social Work. Dr. De Simone has taught a course on Group Practice at the NYU School of Social Work for several semesters and has a special interest in dream analysis. His paper “Birth Mother Loss: Contributing Factors to Unresolved Grief” was published in the Spring 1996 Volume of the Clinical Social Work Journal. Dr. De Simone is in private practice in Manhattan and on Staten Island. He specializes in the individual treatment of adults, adolescents and children and provides treatment for couples and families.
