ACE Foundation Programs
We are in relationship from our first awareness, and throughout our lives. Gestalt Therapy recognizes that it is the nature of our relational experiences over time which, combined with our biological temperament, shape our personalities and those of our clients. This 3-hour interactive presentation will focus on Gestalt Therapy’s understanding and use of relationship. Gestalt Therapy has developed useful theory to describe the process, and the value, of meeting the other with awareness. This theory is foundational to the practice of gestalt therapy.
This presentation will also explore the philosophical underpinnings of gestalt therapy’s relational theory, particularly Buber’s I-Thou, as well as the ways attention to relating with clients may be a prism for change. Participants will learn key Gestalt Therapy relational concepts, such as contact and contact boundary. The workshop will define and explore interruptions of contact, including projection, retroflection, introjection, confluence and egotism. Throughout this presentation the relationship between Gestalt Therapy and Social Work theory and practice will be considered. Didactic and experiential learning will be tailored to meet the needs of social work clinicians from a variety of backgrounds.

The Advanced Clinical Education (ACE) Foundation of the NYS Society for Clinical Social Work, Inc. is recognized by the New York State Education Department’s State Board for Social Work as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed marriage and family therapists #MFT-0028; licensed mental health counselors #MHC-0045; licensed psychoanalysts #P-0017; licensed psychologists #PSY-0121; and licensed social workers #SW-0056.
Out-of-state providers are welcome to request a certificate upon completion of the presentation evaluation but must check with their own state licensing boards to inquire about whether or not the certificate is recognized as transferrable for CEs in their state’s jurisdiction.
As a result of attending this workshop, participants will be able to:
Define key gestalt therapy concepts of relationship including, contact, contact boundary and interruptions of contact.
Social workers, psychiatrists, psychologists, licensed psychoanalysts, nurse practitioners and family and marriage/couple therapists and mental health counselors.
This seminar is appropriate for clinicians with all levels of experience.
Adam Weitz, LCSW is a Gestalt psychotherapist and a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in private practice in New York City. He is a graduate of The NYU Silver School of Social Work. Adam is a recent President of The New York Institute for Gestalt Therapy. Before starting his private practice, Adam was as a staff therapist at The Blanton Peale Institute and Counseling Center in New York City. At Blanton Peale, he had the opportunity to work with a broad spectrum of people and issues. He carries this experience into his ongoing work as a therapist.
Adam is currently a supervising therapist at Identity House. Adam is passionate about Gestalt Therapy. In addition to being a Gestalt Therapy trainer, he offers gestalt-based workshops that explore current social conditions. These have included, You, Me and Our Cellphones; Looming Figures on Shaky Ground: This Era’s Authoritarianism; and Looking Up and Looking Down: Ranking, an Activity at the Contact Boundary. Adam has trained or presented at The Fifth Avenue Counseling Center; Identity House; The Gestalt Center, The International Association for the Advancement of Gestalt Therapy; and The New York Institute for Gestalt Therapy.
Contact Hours will be awarded once the entire course is completed, as evidenced by signing in and out and completing a course evaluation. Certificates will be emailed approximately ten business days after the completion of the course.
