Clinicians report ever-increasing representation of gender expansive individuals in clinics, hospitals, and community mental health centers. But while the Gender Revolution touted by a 2017 National Geographic documentary represents real change around gender inclusion, it is also true that transgender people are exposed to traumatic stressors at much higher rates than their cisgender counterparts. As clinicians work to become more gender-informed and inclusive, they will find it more and more necessary to also increase their competence around treating trauma-related symptomatology. There is a growing need for treatment providers who are trauma-informed, gender-inclusive, and seek to normalize rather than pathologize the spectra of both gender and trauma-related responses. This training seeks to familiarize clinicians with contemporary nomenclature relevant to gender-affirming care for transgender and gender diverse (TGD) people. It then goes on to provide information about rates of trauma exposure in TGD communities, and offer a framework for working with TGD people experiencing the sequelae of traumatic stress.
