A Professional Will is required by our Clinical Social Work Code of Ethics. The intention is to create a thoughtful plan to be activated in the event of our (sudden) death or incapacitation and that the business aspects of our therapy practice, such as client notification, client files, and ending business agreements will be handled in an efficient and timely manner. Yet, many clinicians either don’t create one or are unaware of it. Why?
Our emotional issues get in the way of writing the will. None of us would want to imagine the possibility that one day we won‘t be here. Likewise, we don’t want to think our clients could be negatively impacted if we were no longer available to them. Becoming aware of our obstacles will help us be more available to writing our Professional Wills.
I approach the Professional Will from a relational, therapist-centered and client-centered perspective. The business aspects will then follow. We will create an opportunity to write your Professional Will utilizing therapist and client interviews and experiences, experiential exercises, samples of wills, and through group discussion. I will also provide a ‘colleague template’ for handling these responsibilities if no will is in place when needed.
