The human-animal bond is often an overlooked source of support for people in crisis. This presentation will examine the human-animal bond it its various forms – from clinical to concrete. We will compare the different forms of support animals, including psychiatric service animals, emotional support animals and therapy animals. We will discuss the clinical theories supporting Animal-Assisted Therapy (AAT), along with the benefits of utilizing AAT as a therapy model in clinical practice. We will also briefly discuss other forms of clinical work with people with pets, such as grief counseling for pet loss.
