ACE Foundation Programs
Identifying sibling abuse is critical towards efforts to protect children from physical and psychological trauma. Parent-child relationships are often the focus of assessment and sibling relationships are underexplored. Although sibling abuse occurs more frequently than parent-child abuse or spousal abuse, it poses a threat to one’s physical safety and emotional well-being, it is often overlooked as normal behavior among siblings. There is also a paucity of research on sibling abuse, sibling aggression and violence that have focused on the cycle of violence in intimate and parent-child relations without exploration of other adult attachment manifestations for survivors or a psychodynamic theoretical construct of sibling abuse.
This presentation will focus on the survivor’s perception and interpretation of sibling abuse and reveal how these experiences are internalized and subsequently externalized in interpersonal relationships with a lens towards attachment. Sibling abuse as an Adverse Childhood Experience (ACE) will be discussed as consideration of complex trauma as well. There will also be some interactive participation in which risk and protective factors will be identified; challenges of cultural and countertransference will be addressed; strategies for assessment will be explored; and interventions will be considered for individuals and families.

Out-of-state providers are welcome to request a certificate upon completion of the presentation evaluation but must check with their own state licensing boards to inquire about whether or not the certificate is recognized as transferrable for CEs in their state’s jurisdiction.

5. List five questions to assess for sibling abuse.
Psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, licensed psychoanalysts, nurse practitioners and family and marriage/couple therapists and mental health counselors.
This seminar is appropriate for clinicians with all levels of experience.
Dr. Amy Meyers, PhD, LCSW is a social work professor at Molloy University and a clinician in NYC where she has maintained a private practice for 30 years. She is an advisory board member to the Sibling Abuse and Aggression Research Advocacy Initiative at the University of New Hampshire and has published and presented nationally about sibling abuse. She has also conducted numerous trainings and workshops on diversity, equity and inclusion and transformed a Long Island School District’s approach to culturally responsive teaching. Dr. Meyers is host of “What Would Dr. Meyers Do?”, a podcast focused on countertransference and “getting into the mind of a therapist” where there is dedicated series on sibling abuse. She is currently the President of the New York State Social Work Education Association and a longstanding member of the NYSSCSW.
Contact Hours will be awarded once the entire course is completed, as evidenced by signing in and out and completing a course evaluation. Certificates will be emailed approximately ten business days after the completion of the course.
