Advanced Clinical Education Foundation of New York State Society for Clinical Social Workers Presents:

Program Series for New Professionals: DIALECTICAL BEHAVIOR THERAPY (DBT) AND BORDERLINE PERSONALITY SEMINAR

Program Description

In this seminar, I intend to bring the audience into the internal world of a patient suffering from a severe Borderline Personality Disorder. I will demonstrate my utilization of a Pluralistic Psychoanalytic Approach with specific emphasis on the integration of Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) in order to effectively tailor treatment to this patient’s individual needs for an optimal outcome. I will also discuss the importance of combining a DBT Skill Training Group with individual therapy sessions for this population.

Program Details

After attending this seminar participants will be able to:

  1. Explain the Dialectical Behavior Therapy Approach and list four modules taught within a skill training group to target skill deficits of those suffering with a BPD.
  2. Define ways to integrate DBT within a psychoanalytic approach to enrich and deepen treatment for optimal outcome when treating patients suffering from Borderline Personality Disorders.
  3. Identify various ways to work with internal and external “splits” in order to facilitate the developmental progression of a patient’s ability to synthesize “good and bad” aspects of self, others and situations and to attain “a cohesive sense of self”.
  4. Describe the use of dialectics and provide an example of ways to interpret the transference through exquisite attunement and validation of the patient’s self-state followed by a confrontation of the patient’s repetitive behavioral patterns within the transference.
    a. List ways to use the countertransference for self-preservation when working with the patient’s
destructive enactments while continuing to maintain a strong holding and
    containing environment.
    b. List the benefits of thoughtful self-disclosure and limit setting.
