Widely considered a complex, often controversial figure, C.G. Jung’s life and writings have proven a source of both inspiration and exasperation.   This seminar will present an introduction to basic Jungian concepts and the relationship between his formative life experience and the theory he developed.  Concepts will include: the collective and personal unconscious persona and shadow, anima and animus, synchronicity, archetypal symbols, and paradox as the psyche’s essential truth.  Selected vignettes from clinical material, classical myths and fairy tales will illustrate throughout.

In the final session, we as a group will consider what is going on in America life now at an archetypal level.  Learners will be invited to select an aspect of life in contemporary America (politics, economy, cultural values) and present their understanding from a Jungian perspective.

Learning Objectives:
After attending this seminar participants will be able to:

  1. Define key fundamental constructs of Jungian analytical psychology.
  2. Identify and explain the connection between Jung’s original creative thinking and his personal suffering that led to his formulation for that which is necessary for ‘authentic’ treatment and individuation.
  3. Explain your thinking regarding issues of cultural/political conflict in contemporary American life from a Jungian perspective.
