This presentation will include a definition of the nature of anxiety and an overview of the various types of anxiety, symptoms, causes and the most effective modes of treatment. The distinction between sensory integration impairment and over-anxious disorder will be explored and elucidated. A behavioral, emotional and neurological perspective will be presented throughout. An integration of theory and practice illustrating how different forms of anxiety are diagnosed and treated will be illustrated through three case studies, bringing synthesis to the entire workshop.        

Teaching Methods: Lecture with three case studies and time for audience participation.

Learning Objectives:
At the end of this presentation, participants will be able to:

  1. Compare and contrast healthy and unhealthy anxiety.
  2. Distinguish between sensory integration impairment and an over-anxious disorder by providing examples of each.
  3. Identify specific treatments that target different forms of anxiety and describe why these treatments are more effective than others.
  4. Describe a specific treatment with a neurological understanding of the various types of anxiety reviewed in this presentation.
  5. Compare and contrast the differences between generalized anxiety brought on by previous panic attacks and anxiety brought on by a complicated attachment adjustment.

Roger Keizerstein, LCSW
is a pediatric clinical social worker, certified trauma professional, writer and public speaker. His film and book reviews and case studies have been published in The New Social Worker, The Neuro-psychotherapist and The Science of Psychotherapy Magazines. He conducts workshops and gives lectures on trauma and posttraumatic stress throughout the New York Metropolitan Area. He has been in private practice in East Setauket, Long Island for 36 years.

This presentation is appropriate for clinicians with all levels of experience.
